Rise in Career of Augusto Pinochet

Augusto Pinochet’s regime was considered to be one of the most cruel regimes in the world’s history. Although its been true that his regime has been one of the most economically strong regimes and till date his economic policies are being used. But ironically, he has been accused of gathering about $28 million of wealth through corruption. He has been really cruel of all those who have opposed his rule and regime. He has been involved in violation of human rights and has been charged of corruption also.

He overthrew president Salvador Allende in the year 1973 on 11th september. The combined Chilean Armed forces led a coup and overthrew the regime of President Allende. Pinochet always claimed that he was the main plotter of the coup and took advantage and influence of his position as a Commander in chief to take this step. His government made many people to gather in the national stadium where they started killing people. This was the condition of all the opposers of the regime and in his entire regime and tenure about 3000 people died and 1000 are still missing.

Augusto Pinochet’s Regime was responsible for many human rights violations, as they were involved in the torture and murder of political opponents. The Government commission reported this after an assestation   more than thirty thousand people. The Government of Pinochet killed about 3,197 people and crucified 29,000 of them according to the official toll but actually it includes more. Most in fact majority of these cases were reported in 1973.

Augusto Pinochet was put to prison in UK on the principle of Universal Jurisdiction.

The case was a remorseful event in history of criminal justice, as it was the first ever former government head who was arrested on the principle of universal jurisdiction by another country.Augusto Pinochet was placed under house arrest in Britain for initiating a judicial and public relations battle, and the second one was run by Patrick Robertson, a Thatcherite political operative. He was released in the year 2000 in the month of march on medical grounds.

 Augusto Pinochet died on 10th December, in the year 2006. There were many street demonstrations all over the country on that day after the public learnt of the remorseful  death of Pinochet due to surgical complications. His opponents in Santiago celebrated at the Alameda avenue whereas his supporters showed grievances near the Military hospital. The dead body and its remains were publicly demonstrated on 11th December at the Las Condes’s Military academy. The grandchild of Carlos Prats named Francisco Prats spat on the coffin during the ceremony as he was aware of the fact that his grandfather was murdered by Augusto Pinochet’s secret police. Francisco was surrounded by the supporters of Augusto Pinochet and was insulted.

Augusto Pinochet’s funeral commenced on the same location the next day in the presence of his 60,000 followers.
